When developing a regular routine,\u00a0think about whether your\u00a0child\u00a0is\u00a0a morning person or a midday person.\u00a0Work with your child\u2019s natural bent.\u00a0Everyone is much happier and productive when you do.\u00a0It usually takes time to develop sustained attention unless\u00a0a subject\u00a0is\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0particular area of interest to\u00a0your\u00a0child. As you learn what\u00a0their\u00a0interests are, you can work to build around those.\u00a0We want a child\u2019s first formal learning experience to be fun and\u00a0establish\u00a0a foundation on which they want to willingly engage.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Planning\u00a0activities\u00a0that\u00a0your\u00a0child\u00a0can\u00a0do\u00a0independently\u00a0build\u00a0confidence,\u00a0while providing\u00a0the benefit\u00a0of\u00a0developing\u00a0large and small\u00a0muscle\u00a0coordination.\u00a0Building small motor skills is necessary for writing.\u00a0This\u00a0could involve\u00a0practical life\u00a0activities, as children like to\u00a0imitate\u00a0adults and older children.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dusting\u00a0or\u00a0cleaning\u00a0up a\u00a0spill\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>These activities help develop large and small motor skills and\u00a0teach\u00a0your child how to be helpful.\u00a0This\u00a0builds confidence\u00a0in being an essential part\u00a0of the family\u00a0and later in the community they live in.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fixing\u00a0their\u00a0own snack \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Showing\u00a0a\u00a0child how to\u00a0use a pastry spreader to cut a banana\u00a0or a cucumber, using\u00a0an apple slicer carefully to slice and eat apples, washing fruits and vegetables, etc., will\u00a0help them become independent and develop confidence to try new things.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Washing their\u00a0own plate and cup \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Arrange\u00a0a stool or station with\u00a0a\u00a0bucket, sponge,\u00a0a\u00a0small container of soap,\u00a0and a drying cloth,\u00a0so\u00a0your\u00a0child can wash\u00a0and dry\u00a0their\u00a0own plate\u00a0and cup.\u00a0This activity\u00a0not only\u00a0builds\u00a0independence, but also\u00a0develops\u00a0the\u00a0small motor skills necessary for writing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Read\u00a0Aloud\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Children love\u00a0having books read to them!\u00a0This\u00a0bonding activity\u00a0builds\u00a0the\u00a0auditory skills necessary for learning\u00a0and\u00a0helps develop literary skills,\u00a0as you discuss the books with them.\u00a0As you read, you may\u00a0ask them\u00a0what\u00a0they\u00a0think will happen next,\u00a0or\u00a0why\u00a0they think\u00a0certain events\u00a0happened.\u00a0Have\u00a0your child describe the characters or the setting in the books you\u00a0read,\u00a0and\u00a0allow them to tell you\u00a0the things they like or dislike about the books.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Book Look \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Having\u00a0books\u00a0out\u00a0for your child\u00a0to look at,\u00a0independently\u00a0and\u00a0quietly,\u00a0builds reading skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outdoor Play –<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Climbing, jumping, hopping, skipping,\u00a0throwing,\u00a0and catching\u00a0a ball or a bean bag, and\u00a0learning to jump rope\u00a0are\u00a0all\u00a0great ways to encourage physical activity and develop eye-hand coordination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Memorization \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Children between the ages of 3 and 6 are in their prime learning stage.\u00a0Memorizing Bible\u00a0verses,\u00a0poems,\u00a0songs,\u00a0chants,\u00a0and nursery\u00a0rhymes\u00a0build a child\u2019s auditory discrimination skills and auditory memory\u00a0skills,\u00a0which aids\u00a0in\u00a0their\u00a0educational instruction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oral Language<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Teach your\u00a0child\u00a0how\u00a0to introduce themselves and\u00a0how to\u00a0introduce another person.\u00a0Teach them simple graces, like saying, \u201cplease,\u201d\u00a0\u201cthank\u00a0you,\u201d\u00a0\u201cmay I be excused,\u201d or\u00a0\u201chow may I help you, today?\u201d\u00a0 Teach them how to\u00a0describe an object by\u00a0color or by\u00a0one characteristic, i.e.,\u00a0rough, smooth, big,\u00a0or\u00a0small.\u00a0Teaching a child how to ask\u00a0a question\u00a0is\u00a0an especially important\u00a0skill!\u00a0Usually, when\u00a0a\u00a0child is asked if they\u00a0have\u00a0questions,\u00a0a typical\u00a05- or 6-year-old\u00a0will launch into a story and not ask a question.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One-to-one correspondence\u00a0—<\/span><\/b>\u00a0A young child can\u00a0develop mathematical thinking by\u00a0counting\u00a0the number of objects or spaces on a game board with exact touching and saying the next number.\u00a0This is different from Rote Counting where they count to 10, 20,\u00a0or beyond,\u00a0just by saying the numbers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Number Sense \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Show your child\u00a0<\/span>five objects\u00a0laid out on a workspace. Have your child\u00a0count the objects\u00a0to show that they\u00a0know there are five\u00a0objects. Have your child close their eyes. Take one object and hide it in your hand. Have\u00a0your child open their eyes. Say, \u201cDo you know how many objects I have in my hand?\u201d\u00a0If they look,\u00a0count the remaining objects that are laid out,\u00a0determine\u00a0there are\u00a0four\u00a0objects and\u00a0deduce that\u00a0you must be hiding one\u00a0because they see four objects and they know that if they added one more object to the group it would then be a group of five objects\u00a0and answer, \u201cOne.\u201d Your child has\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0they\u00a0understand\u00a0the quantity of\u00a0five.\u00a0Before children can add and\u00a0subtract\u00a0with true understanding, they must understand\u00a0number quantities through ten. They\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0this understanding by\u00a0correctly deducing a missing quantity that is removed from the whole quantity.\u00a0When they have this understanding through\u00a0the\u00a0quantity of ten, the\u00a0next step is a quick and true construction of the number ten. As our mathematical system is based on ten, a good foundation of this will aid them in all mathematical operations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
