Say, \u201cDo you know how many objects I have in my hand?\u201d\u00a0If they look,\u00a0count the remaining objects that are laid out,\u00a0determine\u00a0there are\u00a0four\u00a0objects and\u00a0deduce that\u00a0you must be hiding one\u00a0because they see four objects and they know that if they added one more object to the group it would then be a group of five objects\u00a0and answer, \u201cOne.\u201d Your child has\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0they\u00a0understand\u00a0the quantity of\u00a0five.\u00a0Before children can add and\u00a0subtract\u00a0with true understanding, they must understand\u00a0number quantities through ten. They\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0this understanding by\u00a0correctly deducing a missing quantity that is removed from the whole quantity.\u00a0When they have this understanding through\u00a0the\u00a0quantity of ten, the\u00a0next step is a quick and true construction of the number ten.
